Environmental Specialist - Vegetation AB/BC (Term Role)

Job Description

As an Environmental Specialist – Vegetation AB/BC with Trans Mountain, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of experts in the EH&S department.

Reporting to the Vegetation Management Lead, this position is responsible for overseeing the performance of spray contractors conducting work at Trans Mountain (TM) right-of-way and facility locations in AB and BC and for coordinating day to day scheduling of the crews. The Environmental Specialist accompany the spray contractor’s work crew providing coaching and monitoring to the crews, identifying and communicating standards and regulations within Trans Mountain’s Vegetation Management program. The overall deliverable of this position is to ensure the day to day program targets and schedules are being achieved.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply TM’s Integrated Vegetation Management Plans including applicable regulatory requirements:
  • the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations
  • the Environmental Codes of Practice for Pesticides
  • the BC Weed Control Act and Regulations
  • the BC Forest and Range Practices Act
  • Conduct pre-treatment desktop reviews and on-site inspections to identify environmental sensitivities present at the site, evaluate presence of noxious weeds and determine/recommend an appropriate control method.
  • Liaise and coordinate with TM facility personnel and Land Department for access and permitting to facilities or right-of-way.
  • Liaise/coordinate with landowners, municipal districts and invasive weed committees on joint weed control efforts.
  • Coach and coordinate vegetation management contractors. Work with contractor to set daily schedules and application methods based on current site and weather conditions.
  • Inspect treatments being conducted and document as per TM process.
  • Ensure all contractor daily tickets are complete and accurate.
  • Track contractor costs and provide progress updates on a regular basis.
  • Conduct and document post treatment inspections.
  • Report safety and environmental incidents as per TM procedure.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Post-secondary education. Preference may be given for B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences.
  • Certified Applicator in the Industrial Vegetation Category for AB and BC will be required before field work begins.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in herbicide application and vegetation control.
  • Plant and weed identification knowledge required.
  • Experience supervising 3rd party contractors would be an asset.
  • Safety training: First Aid, H2S Alive, Confined Space Awareness, WHIMIS, TDG, and UTV training and S100 Basic Fire Suppression.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Attention to detail while working in a time-conscious and effective manner.
  • Technical knowledge to determine treatment methods and recommendations.

Other Requirements and Information

  • Based in Jasper/Edmonton, AB or Kamloops, BC.
  • Contract duration will be from May to September 2021.
  • Full time travel within a geographic area with occasional out of town stays required.
  • This role may require the successful candidate to work four 10-hour days, but he/she will have to be flexible and work longer hours some weeks depending on weather.
  • A truck is required, compensation provided on mileage.
