Drilling Engineer

Job Description

As a Drilling Engineer, Major Trenchless Crossing Program, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of Engineering and Project Management professionals. This position is based in our Calgary office with occasional visits to field locations throughout Alberta and British Columbia. This position reports to the Project Manager, Major Trenchless Crossings Program (MTCP). 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive support to the MTCP Project Manager to ensure that all engineering, geotechnical and other program technical deliverables are completed in a timely and high-quality fashion.
• Perform detailed analysis of engineering and geotechnical deliverables provided by external contractors. Provide comments and owner directed changes as required, while maintaining accountability to ensure that required changes are implemented.
• Review contractor execution and support documents to ensure that proposed plans adequately address TMEP specifications and other requirements. Provide comments as required and track documents to ensure that comments are incorporated, and final approval achieved as per project schedule timelines.
• As directed by MTCP Project Manager, conduct studies and draft reports on a wide variety of technical matters including, but not limited to drilling contractor performance, crossing methodologies and other construction related areas.
• Review drilling contractor Electronic Drilling Records to assess performance and to identify areas for improvement or other lessons learned. Report findings and other outcomes to MTCP Project Manager, Project Engineer and other relevant personnel as required.
• Support development and implementation of MTCP technical KPIs. Provide data and reporting of KPIs as per MTCP reporting requirements.
• Support MTCP Project Engineer and other relevant stakeholders in completion of feasibility reviews to ensure that crossings can be completed as designed.
• Respond to RFIs to ensure timely and fulsome response to contactor inquiries.
• Review drilling contractor execution plans and provide feedback with respect to tooling selections, mud program and other technical aspects to ensure that available proven technologies are adequately considered and appropriately implemented.
• As required, provide technical guidance to MTCP field and inspection personnel for the purpose of resolving technical challenges; providing interpretation of drawings, specifications, or codes; or any other relevant technical matters requested by MTCP personnel

Qualifications and Professional Experience

• Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or similar field from an accredited institution. Candidates possessing an Engineering Technologist Diploma may also be considered.
• 5+ years of project experience with major pipeline or facilities projects.
• 5+ years of experience is designing or supporting major trenchless crossing engineering activities. Preference to be given to candidates with Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), Direct Pipe Installation (DPI) and/or Microtunneling (MTBM) experience.
• Knowledgeable in, and experienced in application of, modern drilling technologies and techniques.
• Prior field experience, or familiarity with, trenchless drilling operations is required.
• Prior experience with drilling design and drafting software required.
• Prior experience in interface management within large organizations with strong organizational skills, technical knowledge, and interpersonal skills to build relationships with a diverse group of third-party contractors and internal and external stakeholders is an asset.
• Proven ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner while working with tact, courtesy, and professionalism.

Industry Certifications

• In accordance with TMEP Health & Safety requirements, candidates must hold valid copies of the following certifications:
• Pipeline Construction Safety Training (i.e. PCST)
• Standard First Aid with CPR A & AED
• H2S Alive (Energy Safety Canada)
• Ground Disturbance Level II (Alberta & British Columbia)
• Canadian Driver’s License 

Other Requirements and Information

• Based in TMEP Home Office in Calgary, AB. 
• Role comprises primarily of home office work, with occasional field visits. Approximately 10% travel to field locations is anticipated to be required. 
• The successful candidate will be required to undertake, and successfully pass, additional project specific health, safety, environmental and other job-related training as part of the TMEP Project Onboarding process.
