Employee Spotlight Forestry Department

Meet Mariya Peacosh, Project Supervisor with SRLLP Forestry Department.

I was born and raised in the small East Kootenay town of Kimberley, BC where I spend my childhood camping, hiking, and fishing with my family.

I graduated from the University of Victoria in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Geography, concentrating in Geomatics, and a minor in Environmental studies.  Using the tools from my undergraduate degree, I started my career in Forestry as a Geomatics Technician, in Northern BC, managing databases and operational mapping.  A year later, I moved to the Southern Interior and branched out from the office environment by putting my boots on the ground as a Forest Technician.

Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to explore several aspects of forestry I am passionate about including operational planning, timber development, and forest health.  This lead me in the direction of enrolling, as a FIT, with the Association of BC Forest Professionals where I anticipate completing my RFP designation next year.

In June of this year, Simpcw Resources Group provided me with the opportunity to join the dynamic team that makes up the Forestry Department.  As a Project Supervisor, I contribute to the development of SRG’s Forest Tenure, GIS department, and special projects such as fireguard rehabilitation with the TNRD.  A working environment that is unique and limitless in opportunity, for young professionals, makes my career with SRG exciting and enjoyable every day.
