For Russ Matthew, the Simpcw Resources Group Mentorship Program has been about much more than just learning a trade it’s been a chance to see his community, his land, and himself in a new light.
“The mentorship program shows you a lot more than just logging,” Russ shares. “I don’t just come to work, do my job, and go home. I travel the reserve, I see the people, and I see the land. I check in to see if anyone needs anything — it’s more than a job, it’s a responsibility.”
Through his role, Russ has gained valuable hands-on experience while also deepening his connection to the community and territory.
His work has given him a broader understanding of how forestry fits into the bigger picture of Nation-building, not only as an industry but as a way of caring for the land and supporting Simpcw members.
